Nicolás Fernández Mercau Shines for NYCFC
It might be a bit early to call Nicolás Fernández Mercau the King of Queens—especially with New York City FC settling into its new home next season—but the 26-year-old Argentine is proving why they brought him on board as a designated player last summer.
A couple of weeks ago, one of the top soccer stars worldwide graced the city, and Fernández Mercau nearly stole the spotlight. With five goals in his first five games, including two against Colorado, he’s made club history as the first player to achieve this milestone.
In the recent 1-1 match against St. Louis City SC at Citi Field, Fernández Mercau found himself tied for third in the MLS Golden Boot race.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that he’s been excelling in a role outside his usual position. Typically a midfielder, he’s stepped into a striker role—or as head coach Pascal Jansen lightheartedly calls him, a “9 1/2”—while Alonso Martinez is sidelined.
“It’s a new position for me, but I feel very comfortable,” Fernández Mercau shared through an interpreter. “I’m still putting in the same effort, and perhaps that comfort level really helps.”
New York City FC believed they struck gold when they signed him during the 2025 summer transfer window. His creativity was key in generating chances and timely goals during the playoffs last season, and his defensive skills enhanced his overall impact.
Since the beginning of this season, his confidence in NYCFC’s decision to bring him from La Liga’s Elche CF has grown.
“Watching him find his rhythm with what we’re aiming for is like a dream,” Jansen remarked, recalling their first discussions while Fernández Mercau was in Argentina, unwinding after a hectic season.
“He hasn’t let us down yet, just as we expected from him when he joined.”
His swift success in MLS, however, has led to rumors about potential interest from clubs overseas. Reports surfaced during the international break that Portuguese teams, Sporting CP and SL Benfica, might be considering a move for Fernández Mercau this summer.
Jansen mentioned he wasn’t surprised by the buzz surrounding Fernández Mercau, although he didn’t confirm any interest. “When you perform well, it draws attention. That’s just part of football,” he said. “There will always be interested parties. If someone comes knocking, we’ll respond.”
Fernández Mercau expressed to Spanish-language radio that he remains focused on the game. “Football is filled with rumors. I just need to concentrate on my responsibilities,” he stated.
The Argentine also revealed to the Post his enjoyment of life in New York City since joining NYCFC last summer. “Everyone talked highly about this city, and now that I’m experiencing it, I completely agree,” he recounted. “I’ve been thrilled to get to know the city and feel like I’m part of it.”
“Living in New York has put me at ease, even right from the start of the season.”
