Islanders Seek Solutions During Brief Break
RALEIGH, N.C. — The Islanders find themselves with four days to reassess their strategy before facing off against the Maple Leafs at home on Thursday.
This break comes after a demanding schedule, giving teams like the Islanders a chance to catch up. Unfortunately, the Islanders, who are currently sitting third in the Metro after their 4-3 loss to Carolina on Saturday, are likely to slip further out of playoff contention by the time Thursday rolls around.
A four-game losing streak is certainly tough to swallow, especially after being overpowered by the Hurricanes on Saturday. Still, perhaps this pause could be beneficial.
It seems that what this team really needs right now is a mental reset. Additional practice time wouldn’t hurt either.
“We have vacations, vacations. We want you to see your family and spend time with them,” Scott Mayfield mentioned. “On the way home, I think about this game and just let it go. Everything has to focus on the next match. We really need to start piling up points to keep our position secure.”
He added, “I can’t keep track of the other scores, but losing a game like this isn’t acceptable. I don’t think we’ve lost four straight at any point this season. It’s not ideal timing, but we can’t alter the past.”
In a bright moment for the team, Matthew Schaefer contributed to Anders Lee’s goal near the end of the game, surpassing Phil Housley to become the youngest defenseman to score 57 points.
Coach Roy’s decision to bring Max Shabanov into the lineup, shortly after the Olympics were canceled, proved effective as he scored his first goal since December 27th.
Isaiah George also made his way onto the Islanders, while Adam Boqvist and Kyle MacLean remained healthy scratches.
On a somewhat positive note, the scoreboard outside of town indicated support for the Islanders: the Red Wings, Senators, and Blue Jackets all suffered losses. However, the Capitals managed a win, keeping them close to playoff contention, while the Penguins seem to be out of reach after defeating Florida.
Yet, the Islanders are still lacking control over their fate, leading Detroit, Columbus, Ottawa, and Philadelphia by just one point while having one additional game played.
