A man from Philadelphia has been charged with attempted murder after, authorities say, he stabbed a gym employee several times at Planet Fitness, which he wasn’t allowed to enter. The incident has left the victim in critical condition.
Davia Massey, 28, was apprehended on Thursday shortly after the attack took place at a gym in the Wyncote section of Cheltenham Township, according to local police.
Police responded to a report of a stabbing around 12:30 p.m. and found a male employee with multiple stab wounds. He was quickly transported to a trauma center where his injuries were deemed life-threatening. There hasn’t been an update on his condition yet.
It appears the assault stemmed from a dispute between Massey and the gym employee, who had previously been banned.
“I can’t believe it… feels surreal,” commented one gym member to a local news outlet.
Another staff member mentioned that “the employees here are really nice,” adding how they help uplift the atmosphere.
“It’s surprising that something like this could happen here,” one observer expressed.
Massey was taken into custody not far from the scene and is now facing multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, and possession of criminal tools, as per police reports.
Authorities noted that bail has been denied, and Massey is currently held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility while awaiting further court proceedings.
The police have yet to reveal the motive behind the attack or specifics about what led to the confrontation in the gym.
