Mets Secure Series Victory Over Giants
The Mets spent a significant part of the afternoon waiting for their offense to kick in, but once it finally did, their path to victory was clear, and they couldn’t be stopped at Oracle Park.
In the 8th inning, their persistence paid off. Luis Torrence came through with a pinch-hit double that not only tied the game but also contributed to a decisive 5-2 win over the Giants.
This triumph marked the Mets’ third consecutive victory, finishing their road trip with a record of four wins and three losses.
As the inning unfolded, Mark Vientos and Marcus Semien delivered run-scoring hits, providing some breathing room for pitchers Luke Weaver and Devin Williams, who closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
Jared Young, who had already racked up three hits, wasn’t able to face left-handed reliever Eric Miller during a crucial moment in the seventh, when there were two outs and runners on second and third. Torrens stepped in instead and, after an eight-pitch showdown, connected on a changeup, driving in both runners.
Matt Chapman then added to the excitement with a hit following Vientos’ grounder, allowing Torrence to score. Semien’s double capped off the rally. Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. also made significant contributions, with a double and a single, respectively, which helped spark the comeback.
Kodai Senga continued to show his skill on the mound, pitching 5.3 innings with only 2 earned runs, 5 hits allowed, and 7 strikeouts against 2 walks. He kept the Giants off the board until the sixth inning before allowing two hits, including Chapman’s game-tying double.
Huascar Brazoban took the mound for 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Weaver and Williams finished the job.
Vientos kept his hot streak alive with an RBI homer in the second inning that gave the Mets an early 1-0 advantage. He had been quite impressive in previous games, reaching base seven times over the last two outings and starting the day batting .471.
After Robert and Young hit singles, Vientos continued his success against Logan Webb, contributing a hit to start the inning. Unfortunately, Semien’s next grounder led to a double play, squashing hopes for a bigger inning.
From the get-go, Chiga utilized forkballs effectively, striking out six out of the first eight batters he faced. Luis Arraez had a challenging at-bat but came through with a single in the fourth, allowing the Giants to take a temporary lead. Chiga then regained his rhythm by inducing a double play.
In the fifth inning, Gerard Encarnacion hit a shot over the left-field fence, but Young made a remarkable play, catching it cleanly and throwing out Encarnacion as he tried to stretch a single into a double.
Chapman came alive in the sixth, hitting a double to tie up the game at 1-1. The Giants took the lead 2-1 later in the inning when Devers managed a hit that landed in front of Robert, ending Chiga’s evening early.
Young continued his strong performance with a leadoff double in the seventh but, after a series of events—including a controversial check swing that frustrated the Mets’ manager—Lindor ended the inning with a weak ground ball, leaving the bases loaded and missing a crucial opportunity.
In the seventh, the Mets loaded the bases for the last time on Webb’s final pitch, but Francisco Lindor’s grounder for the final out dashed their hopes of a significant rally.
