Mamdani issues urgent directive to prohibit concerts and food festivals in NYC parks during FIFA World Cup

Emergency Ban on Events in NYC Parks During FIFA World Cup

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who is an avid soccer enthusiast, has issued an emergency order to prohibit events in city parks throughout the FIFA World Cup. This ban extends to concerts and food festivals as well.

The city’s Parks Department implemented this rule following a request from the NYPD, which disallows new permits for special events in park areas during the tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19.

This directive could prevent gatherings of over 20 people requiring special permits, affecting celebrations like birthdays across the 100 parks in the city.

According to the Parks Department, they adopted these restrictions due to concerns about police resources being stretched thin during soccer tournaments and the U.S.’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

“To better manage resources and control overtime expenses, the NYPD advised the department to reject certain permit applications for new events between June 11 and July 19, 2026,” stated the Parks Department.

Additionally, applications for events that were not held in the previous year might be denied.

However, demonstration permits aren’t affected by this new regulation, as confirmed by officials.

“Events tied to the FIFA World Cup and the 250th anniversary of the United States will necessitate considerable adjustments and redeployment of the NYPD, further diverting resources from regular duties, including crime prevention and public safety,” as noted in the regulations signed by Mamdani and Parks Director Tricia Shimamura.

Before considering a special permit application, New York City Parks will consult with the NYPD to ensure sufficient patrol resources are available for the event.

It’s anticipated that around 1.2 million visitors will descend upon the New York metropolitan area for the eight World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium, located in the Meadowlands of New Jersey. A significant number of fans are expected to stay in hotels throughout the city.

This year’s festivities coincide with Fleet Week and the nation’s 250th anniversary, which is forecasted to draw an extra 6 million visitors.

Several associated gatherings are already being planned. For instance, the NYNJ World Cup 26 Fun Zone will occur from June 17 to June 28 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. It promises live game coverage along with entertainment, local food vendors, and special hospitality experiences.

Moreover, the FIFA Fan Festival NYNJ is set to take place at Liberty State Park in New Jersey during the tournament, featuring live game screenings, music, celebrity appearances, and various family-friendly activities.
