Fatal Shooting Incident in New Hampshire
The suspect in the shooting of a New Hampshire police officer is dead following a confrontation with law enforcement, officials have confirmed.
Matthew J. Mass, age 38, allegedly opened fire at his family members and responding police officers in Raymond on Saturday afternoon, prompting a large-scale manhunt that included road closures and orders for residents to stay indoors.
According to a statement from the state attorney general’s office, “There was an exchange of gunfire between Mr. Mass, who was armed with a rifle, and the police.” After this encounter, authorities found him deceased when they approached the area.
An autopsy is planned for early this week to determine how he died, although specifics haven’t yet been released.
The situation began around 1:30 p.m. with reports indicating that Masse had shot at his relatives using a long gun and then turned his fire on the police. One officer from the Nottingham Police Station sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.
Mass, described as a white male in his middle age, stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 202 pounds. He had recently been served a warrant for attempted arson, which is a felony, just days earlier.
Following the shooting, Mass fled into nearby woods, triggering a comprehensive manhunt that included the deployment of a K-9 unit and cooperation with various agencies, as stated by officials.
New Hampshire State Police located him around 10:06 p.m., hours after urging residents near Ham Road to shelter in place.
During the attempt to arrest him, gunfire erupted, leading to authorities discovering Mass’s body at the scene along with a long gun nearby.
Fortunately, no other officers or civilians were injured during the incident, and officials assured that there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
The names of the officers involved will be withheld until further interviews are conducted in line with standard procedure.
