Teen Arrested for Murder of Young Woman in the Bronx
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 23-year-old woman, Reyna Caceres, who was shot in the Bronx playground last week. Authorities believe she may have been an unintended target in a shooting incident that also involved her brother.
The arrest took place during a parole hearing on Tuesday, as the NYPD Warrants Division apprehended the minor. Caceres was shot in the left eye near Aqueduct Avenue and West 181st Street shortly after midnight on May 28, according to police reports.
Due to his status as a minor, the suspect’s name remains undisclosed. He faces several charges, including aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment.
Officials indicated that Caceres was likely in the wrong place at the wrong time during the incident, which appears to have stemmed from another shooting linked to her brother, who is a person of interest in three separate cases.
Authorities are also examining the possibility of gang involvement in the violent episode.
The shooting left Caceres critically injured; she was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital but sadly did not survive her injuries.
Her family and friends remember her as a “smart, funny, and kind person” who deeply cherished her role as an older sister. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with her funeral expenses.
Reflections from loved ones on the fundraising page highlight her devotion: “Reina was a wonderful sister to her three younger brothers. There was nothing in this world she wouldn’t do for them. She loved them more than anything.”
Additionally, investigators are looking into the involvement of another individual in the shooting, although it’s still unclear who fired the lethal shot.
The arrested minor had prior suspicions against him for gunfire on Bronx streets back in September, facing previous charges of reckless endangerment.
