Arnold Schwarzenegger's son is rising as a bodybuilding star

Joseph Baena, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son, is stepping into the world of bodybuilding, following in his father’s famous footsteps.

At just 25 years old, he’s already achieved professional status in bodybuilding, doing so after only his second competition, as he shared in a recent Instagram interview.

“I’m really thrilled to be involved with the INBA and to be part of such a fantastic program,” Baena mentioned. “My journey in fitness has been long and challenging.”

He recently claimed the title at the INBA Iron Gladiator Classic Physique contest, celebrating his achievement on his Instagram Story.

In addition to that victory, Joseph posted a photo of himself on stage, dramatically holding a sword aloft.

This weekend wasn’t just about one win for Baena; he also triumphed at the NPC Natural Colorado State Tournament, taking home titles in Men’s Open Bodybuilding Heavyweight, Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, and Men’s Classic Physique Novice.

While one might associate Arnold with both acting and political ventures throughout his distinguished career, his roots in bodybuilding remain firm.

Joseph met his father in 2011 when he was just 13, a product of Schwarzenegger’s affair with housekeeper Mildred “Patty” Baena. Growing up in Bakersfield, California, he primarily lived with his mother.

Eventually, Arnold introduced him to the “Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding,” a book he co-authored, which sparked Joseph’s interest in the sport.

Originally a swimmer at Pepperdine University, Joseph transitioned to bodybuilding during his junior year, a decision that changed everything for him. He once described himself as “chubby” in high school and felt out of place, missing out on basketball and soccer due to his physique.

This current year has marked a significant breakthrough for him in bodybuilding—much of which he attributes to training alongside his father.

“I began lifting weights and really got into it; seeing my muscles grow and my strength improve made me fall in love with the sport,” he reflected. “This year, I decided I’d had enough of self-doubt—it’s time to fully commit.”

Yet, Baena is aware that being Schwarzenegger’s son comes with both advantages and challenges. There’s an understanding that his father’s name might not be a free ticket to success.

“My father comes from old-school values and believes in earning your way up,” he noted. “I share that belief.”

Joseph clearly cherishes the value of honor, and he expressed some reservations about utilizing his father’s connections for favors. “Using those connections would feel less honorable to me,” he added.
