Nasa Pilots Discuss Christianity on Space Mission
NASA’s Artemis II crew made time to discuss their faith just before their journey around the moon on Monday.
As they prepared to cross the moon’s far side, where communication with Earth would be lost, pilot Victor Glover took a moment to convey an important message about love, describing it as “one of the world’s greatest mysteries.” He stated, “We love you from the moon.” This message was broadcast to mission control.
Glover elaborated, noting that Christ responded to the question regarding the greatest commandment, which is to love God with all one’s being. He continued that the second commandment parallels this, urging individuals to love their neighbors as themselves.
Concluding his message, recorded at 6:44 p.m. ET, Glover reassured listeners, “As we move away from radio communications, we continue to feel your love from the Earth. To all of you here and beyond, we love you from the Moon.”
There was a brief pause before mission control responded, “This is a copy of Houston. See you on the other side.”
“I’ll see you on the other side,” Glover replied.
Just three minutes prior, the crew had witnessed an “Earthset,” which is the moment when Earth disappears below the lunar horizon. Following this, they faced 40 minutes of darkness as they traveled around the moon’s back side, losing radio contact with NASA.
At 7:02 p.m., they reached a milestone, traveling 452,756 miles from Earth, setting a new record for the furthest distance humans have ever traveled from our planet. By 8:35 p.m., they experienced a solar eclipse that lasted about an hour as they began their return journey.
Glover shared thoughtful insights throughout their mission, especially in a video recorded over the weekend about the “beauty of creation.” He expressed how viewing Earth from such heights reminded him of biblical teachings.
“When you read the Bible and reflect on the incredible aspects of creation… you’re on a spaceship we call Earth, designed to be our home in the vast universe,” Glover explained.
It’s worth noting that Glover delivered his motivational message without any prior scripting, emphasizing that although they were far away, everyone is equally special. He remarks, “Even in the vast emptiness of space, you have this oasis where we all exist together.”
