Amid the buzz about LeBron James expressing his dislike for playing in Memphis, some noteworthy details seem to have slipped through the cracks.
Cleveland appears to join that list as well.
This raises questions about what James might be hinting at regarding his future.
Let’s take a step back.
During a recent chat on “Bob Does Sports,” James mentioned Milwaukee and Memphis as two cities in the NBA that he’s not particularly fond of visiting.
His remarks about Memphis, in particular, stirred quite a reaction. At Lakers’ practice in Dallas, he was prompted to clarify his statements.
“I also said Milwaukee,” James replied. “I’m 41 years old. There are two cities I don’t want to play in right now—Milwaukee and Memphis. What’s the issue? I don’t like going home either, and I’m from there. People are overreacting. And they’re upset my son is on the team. What’s that about?”
To him, the fuss didn’t seem that serious. After all, he’s been in the league for an incredible 23 seasons. Isn’t it reasonable to have preferences?
But while shutting down the media’s questions, he tossed out another thought: Wouldn’t it make sense for him to consider a return to Cleveland?
This season, James is earning $52.6 million with the Lakers and is set to become a free agent during the summer.
His future remains a bit of a mystery. He could hang up his sneakers or opt to play a 24th season, either with the Lakers or another franchise.
He’s had stints with the Warriors and Knicks, but at this point in his career, it’s hard to picture him somewhere other than the Lakers, where he’s been for eight years, or the Cavaliers, where he famously played for 11 years.
However, if he does go back but decides against staying with the Lakers, his time with the Cavaliers might signal the closing chapter of his remarkable career.
James, originally from Akron, Ohio, was first drafted by the Cavaliers in 2003, spending seven seasons there before moving to Miami in 2010. He returned to the Cavaliers in 2014, leading them to multiple Finals and their first championship in 2016.
Cleveland may not be a city he frequents much, yet it undeniably holds sentimental value for him.
When the Lakers faced the Cavaliers in January, James was visibly emotional during a tribute video.
He’s already returned to that franchise once. Maybe, his love for the game could be overshadowed by a newfound enthusiasm for golf, which enjoys year-round appeal.
It seems, on paper, that it’d be easier for James to make a Finals run with the Cavaliers rather than the Lakers, who face stiffer competition in the West. I mean, if he teamed up with Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Jarrett Allen, the Cavaliers would instantly leap into title contender territory.
But honestly, who really knows what James is thinking, including possibly James himself?
Earlier in the season, there was rampant speculation about his potential return to Cleveland, and while many experts pointed toward it as a possibility should he not retire, that buzz quieted when the Lakers went 15-2 in March.
James’ agent, Rich Paul, has called the rumors nothing more than noise.
“There’s no truth to any of that,” Paul mentioned on his podcast. “It’s finished for Max Kellerman and me. I don’t know what’s happening. He doesn’t know either. We don’t even discuss it.”
Ultimately, James wants to see where he stands once the season wraps up.
The playoffs could heavily dictate his next steps, and with recent injuries to notable players like Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves, there’s a “what if” cloud hanging over the Lakers that could see him sidelined for the rest of the regular season and possibly the first round of the playoffs, which is unfortunate.
Here’s what we do know.
Numerous factors will weigh in when perhaps the greatest player to ever grace the court decides what’s next.
Is this a major turning point?
As James remarked, “I don’t like going home either.”
Maybe he was referring to his hotel in Cleveland or simply the chilly weather. It’s tough to gauge how much weight to give that statement or how it might factor into his decision.
Nonetheless, it was one of the clearest hints fans might get about what he might choose for next season.
