Rex Heuerman, the individual suspected of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer, is reportedly “hobbling around” on crutches due to severe leg issues linked to his significant weight gain, sources indicate.
The architect from Massapequa Park missed a court date in Suffolk County last month, citing the need for crutches stemming from an undisclosed medical condition, according to his defense attorney, Michael Brown.
While the specifics of his illness weren’t disclosed at the time, sources told the Post that since being incarcerated, Heuerman, now 62, had “gained weight” and developed serious foot problems as a consequence.
One insider remarked, “He’s a big, fat guy. It’s a leg issue. It’s an offset.” Another added, “He has problems with his legs. His legs were torn and oozing. He is still hobbling around.”
Close to three years ago, Heuerman stood 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed around 280 pounds. Recent images from his court appearances show a noticeable increase in his size since his arrest.
Another source confirmed, “Rex continues to gain weight in prison.”
Heuerman is anticipated to plead guilty Wednesday in Suffolk County Court to seven charges of murdering sex workers and surprisingly, he will also acknowledge killing an eighth victim who has just been identified.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has connected Heuerman to the murders of Valerie Mack, 24, Jessica Taylor, 20, Megan Waterman, 22, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Maureen Brainard-Burns, 25, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, and Sandra Costilla, 28.
The investigation into these murders, including those of four women labeled the “Gilgo Four,” has lingered for decades until Heuerman was arrested outside his office in Manhattan in July 2023.
According to officials, Heuerman is also expected to confess to murdering Karen Vergata, a sex worker with whom he had no previous connection.
All the victims had engaged in sex work through online ads in large cities prior to their disappearances.
In New York state, a second-degree murder conviction carries a maximum penalty of 25 years to life in prison, with each count served consecutively. This means Heuerman could face a maximum of 175 years to life behind bars.
