New era for the Middle East: Trump outlines next steps after Iran accepts temporary ceasefire

Ceasefire Reached Between the U.S. and Iran

On Tuesday night, there was a palpable sense of relief as the United States and Iran brokered a ceasefire just before President Trump’s deadline. This agreement came after a tumultuous period filled with tension.

In the late hours of Tuesday and into early Wednesday, President Trump and other leaders detailed their forthcoming plans.

“Countries supplying military weapons to Iran will face immediate tariffs,” Trump announced, highlighting his administration’s stance.

On Truth Social, the president celebrated the two-week ceasefire and the “Full, Immediate and Safe Opening of the Strait of Hormuz.” He emphasized that it was a significant day for global peace.

In another post, he mentioned, “The U.S. will help boost traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to positive outcomes and economic opportunities. Iran can kickstart its reconstruction. We’re preparing supplies and are on standby to ensure everything goes smoothly. I’m confident about this.”

“This could mark a new golden age for the Middle East, similar to what we’re witnessing in the U.S.!” he added.

As the day progressed, Trump reiterated his commitment to closer ties with Iran, stating early Wednesday, “The United States will continue to collaborate with Iran. We believe significant progress has been made in the regime dynamics. Uranium enrichment won’t happen, as we aim to eliminate deeply buried nuclear materials under strict surveillance.” He also mentioned ongoing discussions about tariff and sanctions relief.

“Many of the 15 goals have already been met,” he asserted, though the details of the ongoing peace negotiations remained a bit unclear. Trump did refer to a 10-point proposal from Iran, while it appears the U.S. has a 15-point framework on the table.

As promised, he announced a strict tariff policy targeting countries supplying military arms to Iran, imposing a 50% tariff on all goods sent to the U.S. with no exclusions.

At a press conference on Wednesday morning, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth praised Operation Epic Fury, calling it a “historic victory on the battlefield.” He added, “President Trump made this happen. Iran is eager for this ceasefire, and we all recognize that.”

While the ceasefire has reopened the strait for shipping, reports indicate that companies remain cautious about the risks of navigating the area. Around 800 vessels are currently waiting on either side of the strait, according to sources.
