Daniil Medvedev faced a stunning defeat at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday, marking a moment many will remember. The former world No. 1 lost to wildcard Matteo Berrettini with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Quite notably, Medvedev slammed his racket seven times during the match, notably after falling behind 0-2 in the second set.
The frustration was palpable—he kept hitting the clay court and, well, losing his composure. Interestingly, the crowd seemed to rally behind him, cheering for him with every swing he took.
Eventually, Medvedev went to the bench and tossed his damaged racket into a trash bin. Following that, he was issued a rules violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. There’s a good chance he’ll face a significant fine as a result of his outburst.
This match lasted just 49 minutes, making it the first time in his professional career that he lost without winning a point in a match, a phenomenon that’s often referred to as a “double bagel.”
Berrettini, who was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2021, expressed his surprise at how the match unfolded, noting, “I never expected to win like that. It doesn’t happen very often.” He added that it was certainly one of the best performances of his life.
On a technical note, Medvedev recorded five double faults, won only 17 points, and had a first serve success rate of just 36%. This was also his first clay match of the season, which could explain some of his struggles.
It’s worth recalling that Medvedev had a similar outburst last year at the US Open, resulting in a hefty fine of $30,000 for unsportsmanlike behavior and an additional $12,500 for racket abuse.
