Meryl Streep Critiques Melania Trump’s Fashion Choices

Meryl Streep recently expressed her thoughts on the fashion choices of First Lady Melania Trump during an interview, reflecting on how women in positions of power are represented in society. Streep, known for her role in The Devil Wears Prada, took issue with what she sees as a double standard in expectations, noting, “Men wear suits, but on TV, they have to bare their arms.” This remark came up as Streep and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, discussed fashion in a more extensive conversation.

Streep pointed out that a particularly impactful moment for Melania Trump was when she wore a coat with the words “I really don’t care, what about you?” during a visit to detained immigrant children in 2018. The actress remarked that this outfit conveyed a strong, though controversial, message.

“While clothing is a form of self-expression, it also comes with historical and political implications,” Streep explained, adding a layer of complexity to her analysis of how women’s fashion choices are scrutinized.

In response, Mark Beckman, a senior advisor to Melania Trump, criticized Streep’s comments as outdated and problematic, stating that the First Lady had already addressed this topic in her memoir. Beckman emphasized that the focus should be on Melania Trump’s leadership and the initiatives she has led since taking on the role.

Following this exchange, Streep shifted her focus to the broader issue of women’s fashion, questioning why women in power feel pressured to show more skin, while men are typically covered in formal attire. “It seems that women have this inherent need to apologize for their presence,” she noted, suggesting that traditional expectations still weigh heavily on women.

“It’s as if they need to broadcast that they are not threatening,” she added, touching on the ongoing tension surrounding women’s representation in professional settings.
