Oregon Ducks QB Coach Koa Ka'ai Stuns Everyone with His Ice Cream Inquiry

When it comes to picking your go-to ice cream flavor, don’t overthink it. If the player does, his chance to be the quarterback for the Oregon Ducks might slip away.

Every coach has their own distinctive approach to assessing players, and Koa Kaai, the quarterbacks coach for the Oregon Ducks, is no different.

Kaai has shared his unusual method for evaluating potential quarterbacks, which is certainly one-of-a-kind.

“I often ask them something simple, like, ‘Do you like chocolate or vanilla ice cream?'” Kaai explained. “If a player hesitates, I’m not really interested. They should have a clear opinion, whether it’s right, wrong, or otherwise.”

“It doesn’t matter to me if they prefer chocolate over vanilla. But if they start questioning me with things like, ‘Is it melted? What brand is it?’—then I’m concerned. What’s this player going to do in a high-pressure moment with 110,000 fans watching? Overthinking could lead to a lack of confidence. It might sound dull, but this reveals a mental aspect we want to see.”

There’s certainly a lot to consider in this situation.

Firstly, decision-making is crucial in football, and teams at all levels invest heavily in psychology to uncover traits related to this skill.

It’s quite possible that an expert in cognitive processes influenced Kaai’s choice to ask this seemingly simple question.

But there are some drawbacks here. For instance, if a player starts questioning the ice cream specifics, it might show they think a lot about situational nuances in football. Bill Belichick has always valued quarterbacks who understand the rules and the current situation well enough to make informed decisions.

Isn’t there a difference between asking about an ice cream brand and analyzing defense? Do they grasp down-and-distance scenarios? Can they identify a blitz? Who’s the Mike Linebacker? Where’s my go-to resource?

I’m no authority, and Kaai is the one calling the shots, but isn’t it beneficial to have a quarterback who seeks comprehensive information before deciding?

Additionally, many people enjoy both chocolate and vanilla ice cream. It might not be fair to expect a quick answer to such questions. Should I toss out whether someone prefers spicy or mild wings? Sushi or no sushi?

This kind of binary question might feel less extreme than simply choosing between two common ice cream flavors.

In any case, if you’re eyeing the Ducks’ quarterback position, it’s wise to settle on your ice cream flavor before the interview.
