Tech firm in the Bay Area reveals unexpected layoffs affecting almost 25% of its staff.

GoPro to Cut Workforce by 23%

In a significant move for the Bay Area tech sector, GoPro has announced it will reduce its workforce by 23%. This translates to nearly 145 jobs, as the company aims to streamline operations.

The San Mateo-based action camera manufacturer plans to implement these layoffs by the second quarter of 2026, according to a recent filing. At the end of the first quarter, GoPro had a total of 631 employees, which means this reduction is quite substantial.

The company’s restructuring plan was approved by its board on April 7. The rationale behind this decision is to “reduce operating costs and enhance operating leverage,” as detailed in the filing. The expected costs of this restructuring range from $11.5 million to $15 million, covering severance and medical benefits for those affected.

Sales figures from November 2025 highlight a worrying trend, with GoPro experiencing a nearly 37% decline in revenue compared to the previous year. In the face of these challenges, CEO Nicholas Woodman expressed optimism about the company’s future, mentioning that the third quarter was pivotal in diversifying and returning to profitability. He referred to the successful launch of several new products, including the MAX2 360 camera and the LIT HERO camera, as part of their renewed strategy.

Reactions regarding the layoffs have been mixed. On a Reddit post, one user noted the difficulties faced during these layoffs and expressed hope for the company’s recovery, while others offered different perspectives—some suggesting that these layoffs might actually be a strategy to attract investors amidst a tough market.

Adding to the concerns in the tech industry, Oracle also announced it would be laying off around 700 employees statewide in California by June, with additional job cuts occurring in Seattle—contributing to a wave of layoffs within tech firms. Reports indicate that Oracle’s layoffs could impact thousands globally, a reminder of the ongoing struggles in the sector.

As GoPro progresses with its restructuring, the potential impact on its workforce and future remains a topic of conversation, both for employees and industry observers.
