The 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie likely suffered a serious medical incident during her kidnapping, prompting her abductors to abandon her body, according to cold case experts. Once she passed away, they saw her as having no further “value.”
Detective Brian Martin from Indiana, who focuses on cold cases, indicated that the kidnappers may have misjudged Nancy Guthrie’s health condition during their unsettling act. He shared these insights in a conversation with NewsNation’s Brian Entin.
Detectives emphasized that things took a “conflicting” turn due to Guthrie’s existing health issues, leading the captors to abandon their ransom strategy and dispose of her body.

In the early hours of that same day, a masked figure was spotted outside her residence.
“What worries me is whether they really grasped Ms. Guthrie’s fragile health and thought, ‘This will be easy. We’ll just keep her hidden for a day or two, make some cash, and drop her off somewhere like a Walmart parking lot,'” Martin explained.
“They ended up having to… it’s tragic… they had to dispose of her because she wasn’t worth the financial gain they anticipated,” he added.
Guthrie has not been heard from since her disappearance 67 days ago.
Evidence of a struggle, including blood splatter, was located on the porch of her Tucson home.
Authorities suspect she was taken in the middle of the night, but so far, no arrests or leads have surfaced despite extensive investigations.
Following her disappearance, law enforcement was alerted to her serious medical conditions, which included high blood pressure, heart disease, and a pacemaker.
“She requires medication, and not taking it for 24 hours can be life-threatening,” noted Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos the day after her case was reported.
