Heroic Principal Tackles Gunman in Oklahoma School Shooting

A principal in Oklahoma is being celebrated as a hero after he was shot in the leg while trying to subdue a gunman at his school on Tuesday. His actions likely prevented a more severe tragedy, according to officials.

As reported by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), Kirk Moore, the principal of Pauls Valley High School, along with other staff members, quickly recognized the threat posed by a shooter—identified as 20-year-old former student Victor Hawkins. They acted swiftly to intervene.

“The principal became aware that a 20-year-old man had entered the school armed,” stated OSBI spokesperson Hunter McKee. “Upon noticing this, other staff members swiftly joined him. Though the assailant managed to fire several rounds, injuring the principal, thankfully, no other injuries occurred among staff.”

Moore was airlifted to a hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

McKee emphasized the importance of the immediate response by the school staff, saying, “Their quick action saved lives today.”

The incident took place around 2:21 p.m., prompting a lockdown until law enforcement secured the area. Once the situation was resolved, students were safely reunited with their families.

Moore and other staff members managed to restrain the gunman until officers arrived, at which point Hawkins was arrested after a return of fire.

Pauls Valley Superintendent Brett Knight praised Moore, calling him a hero in a statement to reporters. “I know this word gets thrown around a lot, but he’s a hero today,” he said.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt also commended Moore for his brave actions. He expressed gratitude for the rapid response from law enforcement and school staff, noting, “We are relieved that no students were harmed.”

As for the motive behind Hawkins’ actions, that remains unclear.

Hawkins has been booked into the Garvin County Jail, facing charges that include firing with intent to kill and illegally carrying a weapon into a public gathering. His bond has been set at $1 million.
