Controversial TikTok Video on Lawns and Racism Goes Viral
A peculiar TikTok video has gained attention for its unconventional perspective on how “white supremacy” appears in American communities, along with proposed plant-based solutions. In the clip, shared widely on TikTok and X, a user expresses her views about the underlying racial connotations of having a lawn.
In the video, she states, “I can’t help but think about how racist and white supremacy that lawn is.” Admitting her theory may seem odd, she still suggests a natural approach to what she perceives as a problem with a racially charged garden maintenance culture. “If that doesn’t make sense, then so be it. It seems so obvious to me. It’s really upsetting.”

The user went on to offer her solution, suggesting, “Bring back the weeds. Bring back the clover garden.” She muses about the concept of natural spaces, questioning whether it’s necessary to maintain a façade of perfection: “Can we just have weed?”
It’s interesting to consider that maintaining lawns has environmental benefits, like reducing urban heat, preventing soil erosion, and filtering stormwater. Proper lawn care can support wildlife and reduce issues like fertilizer runoff, according to the University of Minnesota. It’s a nuanced topic, blending environmental science with these more subjective discussions about societal values.
On a broader scale, the landscaping and lawn care industry creates over 1.4 million jobs and contributes around $188 billion to the U.S. economy, as reported by the National Association of Landscape Architects.
Over the years, some have linked seemingly mundane activities to racial issues. For instance, in July 2024, MSNBC contributor Molly Jonfast suggested that a comment from Vice President J.D. Vance about increasing childbirth among women was rooted in racial motivations, referring to it as a form of “birtherism.”
Additionally, during an address in April 2023, Susan Rice from the Biden administration claimed racism had cost the U.S. $16 trillion over two decades, with the potential to add $5 trillion to GDP by bridging racial gaps.
