Ex-Head of Heritage Action and Rubio Assistant Takes Over Key National Security Position at the White House

Michael Needham Takes a Key Role in Trump Administration’s National Security

The former leader of Heritage Action and a close associate of Marco Rubio is stepping into a significant national security position in President Trump’s administration.

Michael Needham, now a counselor at the State Department, is set to become the Assistant to the President and Vice President for National Security. This post is crucial, especially given the administration’s ongoing foreign policy issues with countries like Iran, China, Cuba, and Venezuela. Reports suggest this move could play a role in shaping the administration’s diplomatic strategies moving forward.

Rubio expressed his support, stating, “Mike is a central figure in President Trump’s overwhelming foreign policy success. In his new role as Vice President for National Security, Mike will continue to implement the President’s America First policy and build on the historic track record of the Trump National Security Council.”

Needham will be taking over the position previously held by Robert Gabriel. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles described Gabriel as a “trusted confidant and a valued friend” within the administration.

Needham has a strong background, having managed Rubio’s Senate office as chief of staff for six years, and he also previously led Heritage Action for America. Having been a counselor since January 2025, he progressed quickly, becoming the Director of the Policy Planning Department by September of the same year.

This promotion comes on the heels of a reorganization within the National Security Council. The restructuring reportedly included staff cuts, with about 20 people placed on leave, along with the appointments of Andy Baker and Robert Gabriel to key advisory roles.

Sources close to the situation indicate that Needham has solid connections with Vice President J.D. Vance’s team, and a senior administration official noted, “Everyone likes Mike. He understands policy, he understands politics.”

Needham’s involvement has extended to significant diplomatic efforts as well; he participated in facilitating the first direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in decades.

His transition to this new role will trigger several changes at the State Department. Dan Holler, Rubios’s chief of staff, is expected to step in as Needham’s advisor and act as the director of policy and planning. Following him, Matt Rose, the current chief of staff, will take over Holler’s position.
