TikToker reveals that swallowed nose ring was only 0.5mm away from her aorta

Unusual Medical Incident Goes Viral on TikTok

A TikTok user from Mexico initially thought her persistent cough was just due to the weather. However, it turned out that it was actually caused by her nose ring, which had somehow become lodged in her lungs.

Monica Deyanira Cabrera Barajas, 26, recently gained popularity on TikTok, with her video discussing this strange medical situation racking up 4.7 million views. According to reports, she mentioned in the video that the metal jewelry was alarmingly close to her aorta.

Deyanira, who has multiple piercings, didn’t realize the nose ring was missing for a while. She visited a doctor after struggling with a chronic cough that lasted over a month. “My only theory, which I told the pulmonologist, is that I fell asleep and somehow lost the ring,” she explained.

What was intended to be a simple 20-minute procedure turned into a challenging ordeal. During the first attempt, surgeons couldn’t remove the object since it had begun to attach to her internal tissues. “It took an hour and 20 minutes, and I still couldn’t get it out because it was stuck,” she recounted.

Facing the prospect of a second, more invasive surgery—and the risk of severe complications—Deyanira prepared for the worst. The night before her surgery, she even wrote a farewell letter to her loved ones. “Honestly, I thought, ‘I’m going to die.’ This is a fear I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” she admitted.

The surgeon was equally taken aback by how close the metal piece had gotten to Deyanira’s heart. The doctor remarked, “It’s like God is taking care of his creatures.” Deyanira noted that if the metal had punctured her lung or heart, the consequences could have been fatal.

In the wake of this incident, many on TikTok are now calling for an end to wearing septum rings.

Deyanira reflected on her experience, stating, “I love piercings and adored my septum piercing, but after what I went through, I can never wear one again.” Some followers chimed in, revealing that her story brought up fears they didn’t even realize they had.
