Controversial Comments by Georgetown Professor Spark Debate
A professor at Georgetown University recently made headlines for dismissing concerns regarding Muslim rape gangs in a post that has since been removed from X. Jonathan Brown, who teaches Islamic civilization at Georgetown, had two reactions on X concerning allegations linking rape gangs to Islam.
On March 31, British MP Rupert Lowe stated, “There is a link between rape gangs and a particular religion. We have confirmed it time and again in our research. That religion is Islam. As a country, we must have the courage to face that fact.” In a subsequent response, Brown wrote, “No more,” to which some users reacted strongly, labeling his comments as “outrageously evil.”
One critic highlighted the gravity of the subject matter, arguing that saying “no more” in the context of serious crimes could be perceived as deeply insensitive, especially when compared to how other groups are treated in discussions around severe issues.
Brown’s account is now private, and he has faced backlash for another post made last June where he remarked on Iran and the potential for conflict. His comments came shortly after the U.S. claimed it had successfully attacked several Iranian nuclear facilities. In his post, he expressed hope for a “symbolic attack” from Iran, saying, “I’m no expert, but I think Iran could still easily get a bomb.”
Georgetown’s interim president, Robert M. Groves, testified before Congress that Brown had been removed from his departmental role and placed on administrative leave due to the uproar over his comments. Groves noted that they swiftly condemned Brown’s tweet once it was brought to their attention.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Georgetown University and Brown for further comments.
