Mother of victim criticizes sanctuary state after daughter's alleged murderer was released

Mother Voices Anger Over Daughter’s Alleged Murder

Jennifer Boss is expressing her outrage after the alleged killer of her daughter, Megan, was allowed to go free due to legal loopholes. Megan was found dead in a trash can in Waukegan, Illinois, in April 2025. The accused, Luis Mendoza Gonzalez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, faces several felony charges related to her death.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) explained that Mendoza-Gonzalez was released following his court appearance because, under Illinois’ sanctuary law, his charges are not considered detainable offenses.

“It’s absolutely insane,” Jennifer Boss said, sharing her disbelief during a conversation with American Report. “I just can’t wrap my head around how this was justified and debated in Congress.”

She added, “His body, which he had for 51 days, was found in his garden, hidden in a trash can, while everyone was searching for her.” This situation, she believes, highlights serious flaws in the system.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Mendoza Gonzales on July 19, 2025. Reports indicate that Megan Boss reportedly went to his home and was found unresponsive, possibly due to a drug overdose. According to DHS, he allegedly left her body in the basement for several days before placing it in a trash can.

Mendoza-Gonzalez now faces charges including abuse of a corpse and obstruction of justice, but the investigation remains ongoing.

On the anniversary of its reopening, ICE celebrated its Office of Immigrant Crime Victim Assistance (VOICE), which aims to support families affected by such tragedies. Jennifer Boss expressed gratitude for the office’s help during a stressful time when she felt isolated.

“When he was free, I felt incredibly alone. It was comforting to hear from them, letting me know they were there for me,” she shared.

VOICE assists families by keeping track of offenders when they move, which proved helpful for Boss. She criticized the narrative that immigrants have significantly lower crime rates, noting that the impact of violent crime isn’t diminished by statistics.

Megan, who would have celebrated her 38th birthday in January, remains in the hearts of her family and friends.
