Drew Fortescue sees the last part of the Rangers season as valuable experience.

Drew Fortescue’s Early Career Outlook

Here’s a closer look at Drew Fortescue’s progress as he takes his initial steps in the NHL. So far, he’s played in seven games, and if he suits up for the Rangers’ final three matches, that number may increase to ten. This is really about him embracing the chance to grow and gather valuable experience for his future.

In the Rangers’ recent 5-3 loss to the Sabers, Fortescue showcased his skills. Drafted in the third round of the 2023 draft, he signed an entry-level contract after leaving Boston College, where he had a standout first season. He seized a turnover from Buffalo and assisted Alexis Lafrenière, marking his second professional goal. Mike Sullivan, the coach, acknowledged the challenge posed by the Sabers, who blend size with skill. Fortescue is set to face further tests in upcoming games against the Stars, Panthers, and Lightning.

After the last home game at Madison Square Garden, Sullivan noted, “We’re up against teams that have considerable size, and it’s going to be tough for the young guys.” He emphasized that the hurdles involve not just Fortescue, but all younger players. The game’s pace, alongside the size and strength of opponents, complicates things. Still, there’s a lot to appreciate about Fortescue’s performance so far.

Fortescue is concentrating on getting stronger in his third and final year with the Eagles. He’s had conversations with the Rangers about the importance of patience in his transition to pro play, considering an additional year in college. During his first press conference after signing, he acknowledged he still has “a long way to go” in his development.

The objective of spending this first year under contract is to gather experiences that will benefit him throughout the summer. In his six games so far, he’s made six hits, blocked six shots, and boasts a plus-5 rating.

Up next, he’ll be stepping onto the ice against star-studded teams. Facing the Stars, who have already secured a playoff spot, a Panthers squad that recently won back-to-back Stanley Cups, and a Lightning group packed with veterans, presents a great opportunity for Fortescue to continue proving himself.

His assist, notably, reflects his advancing skill set. Sullivan expressed enthusiasm about Fortescue when talking to the press, highlighting his playmaking ability: “There’s a lot to like about Drew’s game. The passes he makes are, well, they lead to goals.”

Meanwhile, Lafrenière’s strong performance resulted in his third multi-goal game this season, elevating his total to 24 goals—just four shy of his previous career high of 28. He’s also close to matching his personal best of 57 points in a season.
