Selective Service System Proposes Automated Draft Registration

The Selective Service System (SSS) is moving to automate draft registration, following recent legislative updates. In December, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the 2026 fiscal year. This act includes a provision for automatic enrollment, aiming to simplify the registration process.

The SSS, which keeps a list of individuals potentially eligible for military service, includes male U.S. citizens and residents. Essentially, this new legislation shifts the registration responsibility from individuals to the SSS through connections with federal data systems.

“This legislative change transfers the responsibility for registration from individual men to the SSS through integration with federal data sources,” the agency notes.

The agency anticipates implementing these changes by December and expects to streamline the registration process while restructuring a part of its workforce. On March 30, the SSS submitted a proposed rule in line with this new law, which is currently under review.

According to reports, the automatic enrollment aims to cut administrative costs and address ongoing legal concerns, facilitated by the NDAA’s substantial budget of $30 million.

It’s important to highlight that while nearly all male U.S. citizens and immigrants aged 18 to 25 are required to register, this registration serves primarily as a data collection tool and doesn’t automatically enlist individuals in the military.

Furthermore, despite discussions in the media regarding a potential draft under President Trump, any such move would require specific Congressional legislation, which is currently improbable given the situation with Iran.

The last time the U.S. utilized military conscription was following the Vietnam War, which concluded in 1973.
