Eric Swalwell's campaign collapses following sexual assault allegation

Allegations Against Eric Swalwell Spark Controversy

Allegations against California gubernatorial hopeful Eric Swalwell have emerged, and they are quite troubling. Former staff members have reportedly gone into hiding after claims surfaced that he sexually assaulted them.

According to reports, these incidents took place in 2019, involving young female staffers who were allegedly too intoxicated to consent. This prompted at least four individuals to resign unexpectedly from Swalwell’s competitive campaign, as detailed by Politico.

Among those affected is Courtney Pugh, who served as the chief counsel for Swalwell’s labor strategy, along with several other team members. The news of the campaign’s shutdown arrived alongside disturbing allegations from East Bay officials. They claim Swalwell had non-consensual sexual contact with an employee at his district office in Castro Valley over nearly two years starting in 2019, when he was just 21.

The allegations highlight troubling behavior; for instance, Swalwell reportedly sent explicit messages via Snapchat, including images and videos that were quite graphic.

One anonymous woman shared that after a night of drinking with Swalwell in September 2019, she awoke in his hotel room with no memory of the previous night, only to suspect she had been sexually assaulted. She also recounted another incident from April 2024 involving unwanted sexual advances after a charity event. She emphasized that during that night, despite being intoxicated, she had clearly communicated her desire for him to stop.

These accusations come on the heels of social media speculation and mark the first major allegations involving Swalwell reported in the media. He has been regarded as a frontrunner in the Democratic primary, backed by key unions and notable figures like U.S. Senators Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego.

Polls prior to these allegations showed him competing closely with other strong candidates, including billionaire Tom Steyer and former Congresswoman Katie Porter. Current Republican rival Steve Hilton reportedly holds a lead in various polls, recently securing support from former President Donald Trump.

Political strategist Elizabeth Ashford remarked on the seriousness of the allegations, stating they could potentially end Swalwell’s political career. She emphasized the need to understand both sides of the story while also considering the impact on those who have worked with him.

Swalwell has vehemently denied having any sexual relationship with a staff member, responding vigorously during a recent public event.

Meanwhile, Democratic activist Cheyenne Hunt indicated that Swalwell’s legal team has sent cease-and-desist letters to people who have made accusations. His attorney confirmed that they plan to pursue a defamation lawsuit regarding the claims of non-consensual contact.

Hunt noted ongoing concerns about why these allegations surfaced now, suggesting they could be part of a coordinated attempt to disrupt Swalwell’s candidacy. Political analysts believe his lead in the polls could plummet if the allegations are validated or if more individuals come forward.

Swalwell’s competitor, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, has called for his resignation in light of the accusations. Mahan expressed support for the survivors who have spoken out, stressing the importance of accountability within the Democratic party.

Similarly, Katie Porter voiced her concerns about the allegations, expressing sympathy for the women who have come forward with their stories.
