The California Teachers Association (CTA) decided to withdraw its endorsement of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) on Friday evening, following accusations of sexual misconduct against him.
Four women have stepped forward with allegations, one of which involves sexual assault against a former staff member. Swalwell, who is married and has three children, is facing serious scrutiny.
In a statement, the CTA expressed that, “This allegation is deeply disturbing to Congressman Swalwell and unacceptable.” They indicated the immediate cessation of their support, stating, “Our elected board will convene soon to determine next steps in line with our union’s democratic process.”
Interestingly, there appears to be an endorsement from the CTA that has been removed from Swalwell’s website. Previously, the union, which boasts over 310,000 members, had shown strong support for him. In a prior statement, they had noted: “Our union is proud of the rigorous and healthy democratic process…representing educators across the state voted this weekend to endorse Democratic candidate Eric Swalwell in the 2026 California gubernatorial primary.”
Participants at the time highlighted Swalwell’s commitment to labor, recalling his recent support for striking educators in Dublin and San Francisco. The statement continued to emphasize that Californians deserve a governor who champions public education and unions.
Swalwell has categorically denied the allegations, stating, “These claims are false and were made on the eve of an election against the top candidate for governor.” He expressed his long-standing commitment to protecting women throughout his nearly two decades in public service and indicated that he may pursue legal action if necessary. He plans to focus on defending his reputation alongside his family amid these accusations.
As more allegations arise, it’s worth noting that Swalwell’s campaign seems to have taken down its support page from the website.
