U.S. and Iran Engage in Mediation Talks

U.S. and Iranian delegations are in discussions to potentially end the ongoing conflict, with mediation from Pakistani officials. The talks started Saturday afternoon at the luxurious Serena Hotel in Islamabad.

The U.S. team includes Vice President J.D. Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. However, details about the negotiations remain limited, likely due to security issues.

A U.S. official, when asked if the talks were in-person, suggested they might not be, which contrasts with Pakistani officials who mentioned meetings would occur “in the same room.” If confirmed, this would mark the first direct dialogue between the U.S. and Iran since 2015, a notable development.

The situation is delicate, especially given the precarious ceasefire that has recently been established. The U.S. team arrived at the venue just after 3:30 PM local time, facing numerous challenges ahead. Both nations have firm demands that complicate ending the six-week conflict.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, leading the Iranian delegation, stressed that talks are contingent on a ceasefire in Lebanon by Israel and the unblocking of Iranian assets.

Earlier, President Trump shared thoughts on social media regarding the negotiations, claiming Iranian officials “don’t have the cards” and accusing them of exploitation in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route.

During the day, Vice President Vance also met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who expressed hopes that these discussions might pave the way for stable peace in the region.

This is an evolving situation, and updates should be expected as information comes in.
