Healthcare Provider and Insurance Company Settle Dispute

A significant conflict between a major health care provider and the primary insurance company in the state concluded on a positive note on Saturday.

According to a press release from Memorial Hermann Health System, an agreement has been finalized. This partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas ensures that their insured members can continue to access care at Memorial Hermann locations and affiliated providers. There was some concern, as the previous April 1 deadline passed without a deal, leaving many residents of Houston uncertain about their options.

“Since we began negotiations last summer, our focus has been on advocating for our patients’ health, our affiliated providers, and the Houston area,” Memorial Hermann stated.

Last week, Memorial Hermann lost coverage for BCBSTX insured individuals, which meant patients had to either face higher medical costs or search for new doctors within the BCBSTX network. Fortunately, the new agreement is effective immediately, with BCBSTX informing members that it retroactively applies from April 1.

“Claims processed as out-of-network after April 1 will be reprocessed as in-network,” stated BCBSTX. “You don’t have to do anything. Please be patient, as this may take several weeks.”

Memorial Hermann advised BCBSTX customers who have questions about their coverage to call the number listed on the back of their insurance ID card. They also mentioned that patients who had to cancel upcoming appointments should reach out to their healthcare providers to reschedule.

Blue Cross currently serves around 8 million Texans and covers 14 hospitals in the Houston area. Before reaching this agreement, Memorial Hermann accused BCBSTX of making “unreasonable demands” and expressed concern that lapses in coverage could disrupt care for those who need it. BCBSTX countered, stating they were simply trying to secure a deal that would keep healthcare affordable for their members.

This resolution happens amid a similar contract dispute between the two companies in 2022, which also ended with a new four-year agreement two weeks later after a deadline was missed.
