U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Talks Fail
Vice President J.D. Vance informed reporters early Sunday that negotiations between the United States and Iran did not culminate in a permanent ceasefire.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump declared a two-week suspension of military action, just hours before a deadline for Iran to meet specific conditions lapsed. Vance led a delegation to the discussions following a two-day trip to Hungary, where he was accompanied by Steve Witkoff, the special envoy to the Middle East, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, who played a key role in the Abraham Accords.
“I want to express my gratitude to the Prime Minister of Pakistan and Field Marshal Mir. They were excellent hosts. Despite the challenges in our negotiations, they genuinely attempted to assist us and help both sides reach a consensus. The setbacks weren’t due to the Pakistanis,” Vance remarked. “After 21 hours of talks, we’ve had meaningful discussions with the Iranian delegation. This is encouraging.”
However, he added, “The unfortunate news is that we haven’t secured a deal. I think this is more problematic for Iran than for us.”
Since a March 21st post on Truth Social, President Trump has paused certain military actions based on progress in discussions, despite previously threatening to target Iranian facilities if they did not halt their maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz.
When asked about the failure of negotiations, Vance stated, “I prefer not to discuss the details publicly after extensive talks. The essential requirement is a clear commitment from Iran to abandon their pursuit of nuclear weapons and the means to develop them swiftly. That’s the President’s primary objective in these negotiations.”
Vance further noted, “Currently, their nuclear development facilities have been dismantled. But the critical question remains: Are we observing a long-term commitment from Iran to refrain from nuclear weapons development? So far, we haven’t witnessed that commitment, though we remain hopeful.”
In June, the U.S. employed GBU-57 large-scale ordnance penetrators, deployed by B-2A Spirit stealth bombers, to target sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Witkoff, during a March 2 discussion with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, shared that Iranian officials have indicated their determination to continue enriching uranium, claiming to have enough material for 11 dirty bombs prior to the onset of Operation Epic Fury on February 28.
