Ted Ginn Jr. taken into custody for DWI one day before UFL game

Former NFL wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. has issued an apology following his arrest for DWI on Saturday.

Currently the head coach of the UFL’s Columbus Aviators, Ginn was taken into custody at around 3:30 p.m. at the county jail, according to a spokesperson from the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.

The 41-year-old was pulled over around 12:58 a.m. for not yielding at a corner and was subjected to a field sobriety test soon after.

He was later released after posting a $1,000 bail.

In a statement he shared, Ginn acknowledged, “I made a grave mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions.” He emphasized his commitment to accountability and the standards expected of him as a leader and role model. He noted that failing to meet these expectations weighs heavily on him.

Ginn expressed a desire to learn from this incident and make better choices, aiming to regain the trust of his players, organization, and fans.

“I appreciate the support of my family and the United Football League, and I respect the process moving forward. My focus now is to grow from here and take the necessary steps to represent the Columbus Aviators and this community in the right way,” he added.

At the time of the incident, Ginn was driving with a passenger, who was not arrested. His arrest occurred just hours before he was scheduled to lead the Aviators in a game against the Dallas Renegades. Due to the situation, UFL president and CEO Russ Brandon announced that Columbus offensive coordinator Todd Haley would take his place.

Drafted ninth overall in the 2007 NFL Draft, Ginn had a 14-season career with six different teams: the Dolphins, 49ers, Panthers, Cardinals, Saints, and Bears. He played in two Super Bowls, though both ended in defeat, finishing his career with a total of 42 touchdowns.

Interestingly, this incident unfolded on the day he turned 41.
