Box Office: ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Soars to $629 Million Globally

'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' Breaks Records with $372.5 Million Worldwide Debut

Super Mario Galaxy Movie Dominates Box Office in Second Weekend

The “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has experienced impressive box office performance during its second weekend in theaters. According to estimates released by the studio, it raked in $69 million across 4,284 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. This brings its domestic earnings to $308.1 million and global earnings to $629 million.

While this represents a 48% drop from its opening weekend, it’s still considered a modest decline for a blockbuster release. However, the difference between this film and its predecessor is becoming more pronounced. The earlier “Super Mario Bros. Movie” had surpassed $353 million domestically by its second weekend in 2023, fueled by stronger reviews. That said, this sequel is viewed as a solid success since it had a production budget of only $110 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at ComScore, remarked on the film’s performance, calling it “a very respectable” hold. He expressed admiration for the film’s swift accumulation of over $300 million, especially noting that many tickets were probably sold at lower prices for younger audiences. “Hitting such a box office milestone is quite impressive,” he added.

This film is contributing to positive momentum at the box office, gearing up for the summer movie season set to kick off in May.

Another notable release from Universal this weekend was the romantic comedy “You, Me and Tuscany,” featuring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page. It opened in fourth place, generating around $8 million from 3,151 screens, with a reported production budget of $18 million. Interestingly, 80% of its audience were women.

Directed by Kat Coiro, the film received mixed reviews. A critique described it as “bubbling” but lacking substance, reminiscent of cappuccino foam. Currently, it holds a 68% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Still, it seems audiences enjoyed it—it garnered an A- on CinemaScore, and a PostTrak exit poll showed that 77% of attendees would “definitely recommend” it to others.

Jim Orr, Universal’s head of domestic distribution, noted that the audience response indicates a successful box office run for the film.

In second place this weekend was “Project Hail Mary” from Amazon MGM Studios, which continued to perform well in its fourth weekend. It brought in an estimated $24.6 million, raising its domestic total to $256.7 million and its global total to $510.6 million.

The third spot was taken by “The Drama,” which made $8.7 million in its second week. This well-discussed A24 film featuring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya only dropped 38%, accumulating $30.8 million domestically and $65 million worldwide.

In its sixth week, “Hoppers” from Disney and Pixar managed to secure a top five finish, earning $4.1 million and bringing its total gross to $354.4 million worldwide.

Additionally, the Japanese video game adaptation “Exit 8” earned $1.4 million in just 490 theaters, ranking seventh, and boasts a 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
