Ex-staffers of Eric Swalwell criticize him in harsh letter

Fifty-five former employees have labeled the serious sexual assault allegations against Eric Swalwell, a candidate for governor in California, as “credible.”

The unexpected joint letter was issued following complaints from four women, one of whom, a former aide, alleges that Swalwell raped her.

This situation intensifies a contentious battle in Congress, as Republicans seek to remove him while Democrats prepare to retaliate against Republican individuals associated with similar scandals.

In addition, the Department of Homeland Security announced an investigation into claims that Swalwell had been illegally employing a Brazilian nanny.

The letter, released shortly before Swalwell paused his gubernatorial campaign, stated, “The allegations reported by various news sources are serious, credible, and require accountability.”

It further stated, “We fully support our colleague who bravely shared her story, and we trust her.”

Moreover, the letter emphasized that if Swalwell were to remain in his current positions while these allegations persist, it would be disrespectful to all who have worked with or trusted him.

However, they recognized that some staff members may not have the option to step down due to financial concerns.

Following the allegations, Swalwell’s reputation faced serious damage. One woman accused him of raping her while she was incapacitated during a night out in New York in 2024. The Manhattan Attorney’s Office has initiated an inquiry into her claims.

Another woman shared that she awoke in a hotel room next to him after a night of drinking, mentioning that he touched her without consent.

Swalwell has categorically denied these allegations, branding them as “entirely false,” which he reiterated in a video posted recently.

His legal team suggested that the timing of these accusations raises questions, implying a political strategy aimed at undermining him as a frontrunner in the Democratic race.

On Saturday, another letter was issued from within Congress condemning Swalwell’s actions, highlighting the challenges of staff who still need to work financially.

Since Friday, Swalwell’s campaign has rapidly deteriorated, with significant support falling away—including from close political allies and various organizations.

California Governor Gavin Newsom commented on the situation, stating that as more information emerges, the allegations from multiple sources must be treated with seriousness.

The scandal has ignited a fierce conflict in Congress, with both parties strategizing around Swalwell and other members facing scrutiny for past behaviors.

Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna announced plans to push for a vote to expel Swalwell from the House next week, while Democratic leaders may move to discipline Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez, also dealing with a scandal.

Amidst these events, Gonzalez admitted to an affair but denied responsibility for the tragic death of a woman involved.

The potential for reciprocal expulsions may extend to other lawmakers facing serious allegations. For instance, another Florida Republican, Cory Mills, is implicated in claims of assault, and Florida Democrat Sheila Charfilas McCormick has been charged with misappropriating federal disaster funds, both denying any wrongdoing.

Further legal challenges loom around Swalwell after reports surfaced of an indictment suggesting he illegally employed a Brazilian nanny for years.

He has already faced various concerns, including scrutiny over his claimed residency and issues surrounding his AI startup. Financial records indicate he has encountered difficulties, withdrawing retirement savings and delaying tax payments.

As the allegations gained traction, rumors had circulated prior to the Friday report, and Swalwell initially dismissed these claims as politically motivated attacks.

He insisted that there had been no claims or settlements regarding these scandals, yet his assertion that he had not engaged in non-disclosure agreements seems inconsistent with accounts suggesting otherwise.
