Cam Young discusses the uncomfortable final round situation with Rory McIlroy at the Masters

Rory McIlroy Claims Second Masters Title

Rory McIlroy has secured his place as a Masters champion once more, clinching his second green jacket with his signature focus and strategy.

As Sunday approached, McIlroy and Cam Young were neck and neck at 11 under, ready to take on the final round together.

Interestingly, a year after Bryson DeChambeau mentioned that he and McIlroy barely spoke during their round, a similar silence seemed to prevail between McIlroy and Young. Young commented, “I’m not really a person who talks a lot, and I don’t think he really wanted to talk to me today.”

“We’ll be in the final group for the Masters on Sunday. It’s not about making friends; we’re competitors,” Young added, acknowledging the seriousness of their situation.

McIlroy maintained his composure and ultimately topped the leaderboard with a 12-under score, outpacing Young and other contenders. Scottie Scheffler finished just one stroke behind at 11 under, while Young shared the third spot with Tyrrell Hutton, Russell Henry, and Justin Rose, all at ten under.

Young briefly took the lead after McIlroy faced a double bogey on the fourth hole, but unfortunately for him, he faltered with subsequent bogeys on the sixth, seventh, and ninth holes.

Reflecting on last year, DeChambeau faced McIlroy on the final day as well, being just two strokes off his mark at that point. Following McIlroy’s playoff win against Rose, DeChambeau expressed his frustration, saying that McIlroy had not engaged with him at all during their round, suggesting a lack of friendliness from the golfer.

In response, McIlroy clarified, “I don’t know what he expected. We’re trying to win the Masters. I’m not trying to be his best mate there.” His sports psychologist, Bob Rotella, echoed this mindset, noting that McIlroy’s focused approach was a deliberate strategy for the week.

McIlroy may not have formed a new friendship during his round with Young, but winning the Green Jacket for a second consecutive year undoubtedly brings him satisfaction.
