Parking garage collapse in Philadelphia results in 1 death and 2 people unaccounted for

Tragic Collapse in Philadelphia Parking Garage

The bodies of two steelworkers were found in the debris of a Philadelphia parking garage that partially collapsed on Wednesday, as city officials reported on Monday. Mayor Cherrell Parker held a news conference to announce the details, noting that the two deceased men, along with another individual who was rescued shortly after the collapse but later died, were affiliated with the Ironworkers 401 union and the Philadelphia Building and Construction trade union.

“To the men and women of Local 401, and to every member of the Philadelphia construction industry, let me say this: Philadelphia feels your pain, Philadelphia is praying for you, and your city stands with you,” Parker expressed.

As of now, the identities of the three individuals have not been disclosed. The parking garage, located near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue in South Philadelphia, was under construction when the incident occurred. A search and rescue team managed to pull one man from the rubble, but he succumbed to his injuries later that day. Initially, the other two workers were unaccounted for.

After officials confirmed that the two remaining individuals were deceased, rescue efforts shifted focus. Fire Chief Jeffrey Thompson reported that both bodies were located in a stairwell, an unusual architectural feature of the structure. He described the recovery process, which involved various tools such as shovels and buckets, alongside manual labor by the rescue teams. A K-9 unit was also employed to aid in the search.

The recovery operations necessitated demolishing parts of the parking structure to ensure the safety of the site. Parker stated that the coroner was investigating the specifics surrounding the deaths.

Furthermore, the mayor committed to conducting a thorough, independent investigation into the reasons behind the collapse, emphasizing a need for accountability. “We should continue to keep all of our families and loved ones in our prayers,” Parker added. “And we pray for God’s blessings on the three souls and all those affected by this tragedy.”
