FBI Raids Home of Suspect in Attack on OpenAI CEO
The FBI conducted a raid at the Texas residence of a 20-year-old who is accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home in San Francisco. The incident reportedly occurred last week.
A source reported that investigators executed a search warrant in Spring, Texas, on Monday morning, gathering evidence related to the suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama. He is believed to have traveled from Texas to California with the intention, possibly, of harming OpenAI’s CEO.
Authorities mentioned that Moreno-Gama’s actions were influenced by an anti-AI ideology. When he was arrested, he reportedly had a manifesto on him, which supposedly detailed other AI executives and investors, complete with their names and addresses.
According to San Francisco police, Moreno-Gama threw the Molotov cocktail at Altman’s property, igniting the front gate, but fortunately, no injuries resulted from the attack.
Witness reports indicate that after the incident at Altman’s home, Moreno-Gama went to OpenAI’s headquarters, where he was captured on surveillance footage throwing a chair at a glass door. At that point, he allegedly threatened to burn down the building and harm everyone inside.
He was apprehended outside the OpenAI building while possessing kerosene and a lighter.
On Monday afternoon, the Justice Department is expected to file federal charges against him, including attempted damage to property using an explosive and possession of an unregistered firearm. Moreno-Gama has already faced several state charges, including attempted murder, connected to the Molotov cocktail incident.
In response to this attack, Altman shared a family photo on his blog, expressing love for his family and explaining his decision to share the image as a potential deterrent against such violent acts.
Over that same weekend, San Francisco police reported two additional arrests related to separate incidents near Altman’s home, following reports of gunfire.
Police Chief Derrick Lu emphasized the department’s commitment to tackling gun-related crimes seriously and thanked officers for their swift action in apprehending suspects and removing dangerous weapons from the streets.
An OpenAI representative clarified that the recent incidents near Altman’s home were unrelated and confirmed that there was no indication his residence was specifically targeted.
