Recap of Episode 7: "Family Business"

Episode Recap: Family Business

Right after Casey Dutton openly shares his sorrow over his wife’s untimely passing—she’s someone he hasn’t fully come to terms with—Dolly Weaver, a seasoned rancher, finds herself in emotional distress as she returns to her former life. Meanwhile, Casey is in the pen working with Monica’s stallion. He questions the kicking horse, “What part of evolve or die don’t you understand?” drawing parallels to his own situation. He’s still grappling with Monica’s death, while Dory is pushing him to embrace a new chapter that involves Dolly, creating a scene filled with that signature Montana dialogue. Did you notice the hint of a half-smile from Casey? It’s his only nod to flirting. Yet, Dolly seems to take on that role well. When she invites him for a backcountry tour of East Camp, he doesn’t hesitate. “Please do your best to follow me,” he responds.

A new mission emerges at headquarters when an attempt is made to detonate federal judge Pauline Ayers’ car while she’s inside. Consequently, Cal and Belle are dispatched to her home for security, while Cruise and Cowboy hunt for anyone with a motive to harm her. Judge Ayers, a wealthy individual with a teenage daughter and married to Blake, who works in international charity, engages Belle in a conversation about balancing family and work. What does Belle suggest? Finding common ground with your husband.

This is particularly noteworthy for Pete Calvin, who has opted to stay tight-lipped. Earlier, during a doctor’s appointment for chronic pain, he spotted Belle’s husband, Jared, engaging in flirtation with another woman in the parking lot. Even though Belle had mentioned a planned camping trip with their son, he chose to remain silent at the Ayers residence. Cal is concerned about his team, but what are the boundaries when it involves something as delicate as infidelity?

Following the bombing and a sniper attack at her home, the team relocates Judge Ayers’ family to East Camp for their safety. While she’s being interrogated, new findings about her husband’s suspicious finances come to light. Blake has a hidden fake passport behind a wall in Equatorial Guinea, has funneled money through shell companies, and seems to have dubious ties with local politicians. By the time Cal alerts Casey about Blake being the real target, it seems involved in a secret arms deal that features a menacing partner—a plot twist that feels straight out of a season of Reacher.

Eventually, Cruise and Casey track down a disgruntled ex-Delta Force contractor responsible for Blake’s kidnapping, leading to a family reunion. However, the couple now faces the reality of a troubling secret hanging over their marriage. When Belle pours bourbon and suggests they need to discuss the investigation that has “just revealed a marriage,” Cal can’t hold back any longer. He admits he saw Jared’s indiscretions. No wonder Belle lets out a heavy sigh. She reflects that her husband should have been more cautious, especially while managing their son. It turns out that, thanks to Braxton, they are bound together—he’s their only commonality.

I guess that’s how quick things can change.

After some whiskey and a rather intense make-out session on the couch, Pete and Belle stumble through an awkward moment before parting ways. Neither of them seemed to dislike the encounter, though. Later, following a drive with Dolly, Casey admits he enjoys her company—but only after having their first disagreement. Dolly’s father, Tom Weaver, a wealthy rancher, arrives with a fresh elk for dinner. His usual rants about John Dutton’s ranching legacy and Yellowstone’s poor profits spoil the mood at the table. “I want to make East Camp part of my operation,” he declares.

Casey is visibly upset, but for Luke Grimes, it’s just a hat-off moment. Is Dolly merely a pawn in her father’s ambitions? Or is she genuinely interested in Casey? She insists her motives are pure and claims ignorance of her father’s intentions before making his pitch. Yet, she also confesses her reasons for staying in Montana stem from being made a partner in her father’s livestock business. So, it leaves a lot of questions hanging. For now, though, Casey believes Monica’s memory deserves to remain pristine. Best to keep things in the family, I suppose.

Key Moments from Episode 7

  • The talk about Weaver and the ranch might conclude. A fun Yellowstone nod appears when Casey suggests that he and Dolly could create a system for tracking their herd using RFID technology—who knows, maybe Beth would dig that!
  • Back at Bullet and Barrel, the new entertainment is a country singer; Adam Sanders is set to perform his latest single, “His to Mine.”
  • More importantly, the real intrigue arises when Miles takes a chance with Maddie. Their relationship remains strained, but with a little nudge from Cruise, Maddie takes the brave step to ask him out, clearly won over by his newfound confidence.
