Eric Swalwell Resigns from Congress Amid Allegations
California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell announced his resignation from Congress on Monday. This decision follows his withdrawal from the upcoming gubernatorial race in California, a move prompted by serious allegations detailed in recent reports.
“I sincerely apologize to my family, staff, and constituents for past errors in judgment,” Swalwell stated. He expressed his intent to challenge what he believes are significant and false accusations against him. Still, he recognized the need to take responsibility for his mistakes and mentioned, perhaps somewhat reluctantly, that it was time to resign to focus on his duties.
While Democrats generally did not demand his resignation, the significant media scrutiny, especially from the Chronicle, led many of Swalwell’s colleagues, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to withdraw their support from his campaign.
Pelosi emphasized that the allegations against Swalwell should be examined independently of his campaign, stating that they deserved respect and thorough investigation. “This sensitive matter requires full transparency and accountability,” she added.
Other Democrats quickly echoed her sentiment, with some even retracting their earlier endorsements. Senator Ruben Gallego voiced concern, saying he took the Chronicle’s report seriously and affirmed the importance of listening to women who come forward with such claims.
Swalwell has been a member of Congress since 2013. Before that, he served as a prosecutor and was elected to the City Council in Dublin, California, in 2010. He was also notable for spearheading the impeachment effort against President Trump in 2019 and for investigating Russian election interference in 2016.
As for his future in politics, it’s uncertain if this resignation signals the end of his career. Allegations had surfaced earlier this month when Cheyenne Hunt, a former staffer, shared troubling accounts from women claiming Swalwell had engaged in predatory behavior.
In response to the accusations, Swalwell’s office initially dismissed them as false, suggesting they were part of a political smear campaign against him, particularly as the election approached. However, the situation has raised significant questions about his actions and credibility moving forward.
