Islanders' playoff exit raises uncertainty about Anders Lee's future

Anders Lee’s Uncertain Future with the Islanders

It’s unclear if Tuesday’s game was Anders Lee’s final appearance as an Islander, even for the captain himself.

What stands out, however, is Lee’s deep desire to finish his career with the team that selected him in 2009.

Before the Islanders wrapped up their season against the Hurricanes, Lee expressed, “I’ve given my all to this organization. Everything. Everything.”

“This is where I’ve played my whole career. This is where I’ve strived to be my best. I don’t take anything for granted. I just want to have a good night tonight with this team. Let’s finish with two points.”

For most of the season, it seemed unlikely that Lee would consider playing elsewhere. But since the trade deadline, two factors have emerged that make a different future seem plausible.

Firstly, the way the Islanders concluded their season—a disappointing failure to reach the playoffs—has led general manager Mathieu Darche to rethink the team’s roster, despite an overall trend of improvement.

With his contract set to expire, Lee, who is now 35, could be a key piece in helping enact changes.

Secondly, financial considerations are at play. The Islanders could have approximately $10 million in cap space this summer as they plan to bring back or acquire players. Lee likely won’t command the same $7 million annual average value as before, but what kind of cut will he be willing to accept to stay with the Islanders?

In addition, the way the Islanders managed the trade deadline—acquiring Brayden Schenn and re-signing Jean-Gabriel Pageau—offers some context. The plan initially was to wait until the end of the season to negotiate with Lee, but that was altered when it came to Pageau.

There was some initial uncertainty around how the team would handle contracts for both Schenn and Pageau moving forward. Both players primarily occupy center positions and excel in face-offs, making them strong candidates for middle lines. Still, Schenn’s versatility as a winger could complicate matters for Lee, who has been the Islanders’ captain since 2018.

Lee remains an asset for the team and has shown remarkable skill despite his age. He led the Islanders this season in expected goals with 19 goals and 23 assists, proving he can fit in with any line.

His leadership extends beyond the ice. Earlier this season, during a lengthy 17-day road trip, Lee offered his Minnesota home to foster team bonding. It turned out to be a memorable experience for the players, making it one of the highlights of their season.

Letting Lee walk away now would create a significant shift in the team’s dynamic.

This raises a poignant question: Is Darche considering that option?

Lee reflected on the uncertainties, saying, “I’d be lying if I said I just started thinking about the future. There’s not much that can be resolved right now. Nothing has changed.”

“I’ll keep doing what I can to help this team. I’m ready to fulfill whatever role they need from me. Whatever it takes to help lead this team forward.”
