Athlete Bryce Boettcher seizing his opportunity for the 2026 NFL Draft

Bryce Boettcher: A Dual-Sport Athlete’s Journey

Bryce Boettcher made quite a splash recently, showcasing his athleticism with a remarkable diving catch while jumping on a ball in the air. It’s reminiscent of his interception during a game against UCLA and, oh, that incredible hit-save catch in left-center field against Seattle. Unbelievably, both feats were accomplished by the same athlete.

Boettcher, who has excelled in both baseball and football at Oregon State, was drafted by the Astros in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. However, instead of jumping straight into the minor leagues, he decided to explore his potential in football first.

He’s projected to be a mid-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, likely as a linebacker with a knack for special teams. “You can’t hit people on the baseball field,” Boettcher remarked during the NFL Combine. “I love baseball, but football makes me feel alive. And I’m here for a reason.” You can sense the passion in his words, can’t you?

Now, I wouldn’t want to put Boettcher in the same category as legends like Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders, but he certainly represents a rarity in a time when athletes often focus on a single sport.

One NFL executive recently told a publication, “He’s smart, he’s tough, instinctive, and plays faster than you’d expect. He’s solid on special teams and could vie for a starting spot—or perhaps even end up as a top third linebacker. He’s made it clear that he’s dedicated to football.”

Baseball was Boettcher’s initial passion. Derek Jeter was his childhood idol, and baseball opened doors for him to stay in Eugene, Oregon, fulfilling his dream of being a Duck. After some struggles with hitting, he approached the new football coach, Dan Lanning, for a tryout in 2022.

It seemed that joining the football team not only solidified his athletic reputation but also positively impacted his baseball skills. On April 29, 2023, after taking part in Oregon State’s spring football game, Boettcher hustled to the baseball field, making an appearance as a defensive substitute in the ninth inning. By 2024, he boasted a .276 average, 12 home runs, 35 RBIs, 46 runs, and 15 stolen bases, earning accolades as an NCAA Gold Glove-winning center fielder.

Scouts noted his grace on the field, pointing out that he relied more on his natural athleticism than honing sophisticated techniques. He was seen as a promising draft pick, especially considering his raw power and evolving skills. Yet, there’s an inherent risk regarding his hitting potential at the major league level, as suggested by one MLB scout.

The Astros, recognizing Boettcher’s commitment to football, supported his choice by giving him a draft spot and a signing bonus of $150,000. “Right now, I’m fully focused on football and aiming for a Super Bowl. Baseball is on hold,” he mentioned, adding that the Astros were understanding of his desire to see his football journey through.

When Boettcher sharpened his focus, he excelled. Starting as a walk-on, he made significant strides by 2025, racking up 136 tackles—ranking sixth nationally—and earning the 2024 Burlsworth Trophy as FBS Player of the Year. He also made contributions on special teams, covering punts and kickoffs, even blocking kicks at times.

In a memorable moment, he threw out the first pitch at an Oregon State baseball game while still in his shoulder pads. “I’ve never encountered someone so passionate about football,” he said. “I believe that passion and physicality are key to winning games, and that’s who I am.”

Another NFL insider mentioned that even if Boettcher faces challenges in football, his diverse skills could give him an edge over other mid-tier linebacker prospects. Boettcher’s “intangibles” seem to set him apart.

“What I’m most proud of is my mental growth in football,” Boettcher reflected. “Initially, I was pretty raw. I understood some basic plays, like Cover 3 and Cover 2, but there were so many more intricate details that I picked up along the way.” This development, he notes, has truly elevated his game.
