Volotea, a budget airline in Spain, has recently stirred frustration among its passengers by introducing an extra fuel charge after ticket purchases.
Initially, the fee, reported by aviation blog Simple Flying to be between $8 and $11 per passenger, might not seem substantial. However, many travelers worry this could lead to increased airline prices overall as fuel costs keep climbing.
The airline has a policy akin to those of certain cruise lines, which permits them to adjust prices based on oil expenses. Dubbed the “Fair Travel Promise,” this regulation allows for such changes.
Reports indicate that customers are advised prior to their journeys—about a week before takeoff—of potential extra charges should oil prices increase.
Volotea’s website notes, “In the event of unusual fluctuations in fuel prices affecting international energy markets, Volotea may apply limited and temporary adjustments to ticket prices prior to the departure of scheduled flights.”
The website further mentions that any changes will be disclosed to passengers before departure once the new fuel costs are determined.
“Any adjustments will only affect those who were warned about it during the booking process, allowing them to make an informed choice before finalizing their purchase,” it added.
Since news of these additional fees emerged, travelers have taken to social media to express their opinions.
One user commented, “It’s disappointing that an airline like Volotea would resort to such extreme measures. I get that fuel costs are a concern, but charging for already booked seats is a risky move that can harm their reputation.”
Another reader questioned, “Isn’t there a loophole in the Conditions of Carriage? Who actually reads those?”
Conversely, another commenter felt differently, asserting, “Airlines might just opt to cancel flights instead, like some already have. That would lead to fewer available seats, and prices would rise.” They also mentioned that “$10 seems reasonable for maintaining normal flight operations.”
The larger worry is that Volotea’s additional fee may be indicative of broader trends in the airline industry.
Travel experts from popular sources have urged travelers not to delay their flight bookings.
One guide suggested, “If you’re considering summer travel, secure your airfares now. As many experts indicate, prices might surge at any moment, especially for June and July flights, which have become the priciest and busiest time to travel in recent years.”
