Today’s tax deadline: advice for timely filing and quick refunds

Five tax errors that could lead to significant costs for Americans before April 15

Last-Minute Tax Tips for the 2025 Tax Return Deadline

As the midnight deadline approaches for Tax Day, CPA and TurboTax expert Lisa Greene-Lewis shares some essential advice for individuals filing their 2025 tax returns.

Taxpayers need to file their returns or request an extension before the clock strikes midnight on April 15. For those who are a bit behind, Greene-Lewis suggests being organized. “Put all your documents together in one spot,” she remarked during an interview. “Make sure you have your income reporting forms like W-2s and 1099s handy, along with any tax-deductible receipts.”

She also pointed out that recent changes brought by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act may complicate document collection this year. Considerations like tips, overtime, and social security income are now more complex than in the past.

Applying for a Tax Extension Before April 15

Regarding the quickest way to get refunds, Greene-Lewis emphasized the need for electronic filing. “E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest route to getting your money back,” she said. Mailing returns could lead to uncertainties about when they’ll be processed. Filing online provides immediate confirmation that your return has been received.

Taxpayers expecting refunds may benefit from recent legislative changes, such as the enhancement of the child tax credit and new deductions for auto loan interest on certain US-made vehicles. Companies can also depreciate equipment right away instead of spreading it out over years.

Be Mindful of Potential Tax Scams

As the deadline nears, Congress has cautioned taxpayers to stay vigilant against tax scams. Greene-Lewis mentioned that those opting to file paper returns should be aware of updates to the US Postal Service’s (USPS) processes. Recently, the USPS altered its postmarking procedures, which could result in delays. Taxpayers are advised to send their returns early, use certified mail, or request a manual “round date stamp” at the post office to ensure timely postmarks.

Electronic filing leads to quicker processing of returns, and most individuals are likely to receive a refund. Greene-Lewis noted, “We expect refund amounts to increase this year,” suggesting taxpayers should utilize all available deductions and credits—especially if they might owe taxes.

Requesting an Extension

If additional time is needed, taxpayers can apply for an extension online through the IRS or through tax professionals. However, it’s crucial to note that if you owe taxes, you’ll need to make that payment on time or set up a payment plan.

“Remember, applying for an extension is for filing only, not for payment. Even if you file for more time, make sure to pay any owed amount by the due date,” Greene-Lewis advised.
