Kimmel and Colbert do not address Swalwell misconduct claims

Eric Swalwell Resigns Amid Misconduct Allegations

The late-night shows “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” chose not to address the recent sexual misconduct allegations against former Representative Eric Swalwell during their Monday and Tuesday broadcasts.

Swalwell made his resignation official on Monday, which came after a wave of lawmakers called for his expulsion following the allegations that emerged over the weekend. He had previously suspended his campaign for governor of California just a day earlier.

Interestingly, Swalwell had used late-night platforms to share significant political updates, including his gubernatorial run, which he announced on Kimmel’s show back in November. Seven years ago, he even kicked off his 2020 presidential bid during a segment with Colbert.

Moreover, both Kimmel and Colbert overlooked a similar predicament involving Republican Representative Tony Gonzalez, who admitted to sexual misconduct earlier this year and also announced plans to step down.

Kimmel’s monologues often tease or gloss over current events, and this time he hinted at something amiss with a joking remark about President Biden attending a portrait unveiling. “Maybe he’ll run for governor of California,” Kimmel quipped, leaving the audience to ponder.

As for Colbert, he tackled various topics, including Biden’s controversial posts but didn’t mention Swalwell’s situation at all. Representatives from both shows have yet to respond to inquiries about this absence of commentary.

It’s worth noting that Swalwell had been a prominent figure on cable news, frequently appearing on networks like CNN and MSNBC—over 50 times in just a few months in 2026. Some experts suggested that Swalwell’s reputation among women was somewhat known, and concerns had been circulating for a while.

Some commentators have even described concerns about his behavior as an “open secret,” suggesting that even within political circles, many were aware of the allegations against him. One journalist commented that details surrounding the situation have been widely speculated among those familiar with the political scene.
