YouTuber Investigates Fraudulent Childcare Centers
YouTuber Nick Shirley gained attention for looking into potentially fraudulent childcare centers operated by Somalis in Minnesota, notably the now-closed Quality Learning Center.
Recently, Shirley has shifted his focus to California. He claims to have found over $170 million in fraud in the state. However, a bill proposed by the wife of California Attorney General Rob Bonta could criminalize the kind of on-the-ground journalism he practices.
Democratic Assemblywoman Mia Bonta introduced AB 2624 on February 20th. The bill seeks to create an “Address Confidentiality Program” aimed at certain immigration service providers, as well as their employees and volunteers, who might face threats of violence or harassment due to their work.
This legislation would restrict the sharing of personal information or images of designated immigration service personnel to prevent harassment or harm. It also targets anyone who might post such information online.
Critics argue that AB 2624 could stifle journalistic efforts like Shirley’s. Republican Congressman Carl DeMaio has referred to the bill as the “Stop the Nick Shirley Act,” saying it aims to intimidate citizen journalists who reveal misuse of public funds.
DeMaio expressed concern that California Democrats might prioritize protecting potential wrongdoers over addressing the misconduct itself.
Shirley himself has spoken out against the bill, stating that it’s time for people to take a stand against oppression from those in power.
