Editor Suspended for False Quotes and Misattributions

Mediaite, known for its far-left stance, recently launched a newsletter titled One Sheet. However, its editor, Colby Hall, has already faced suspension due to issues with fabricated quotes and misattributions.

On January 21st, the release announcement described One Sheet as “the newsletter of newsletters,” offering a curated selection of the best daily media content for a monthly subscription. Mediaite’s team promised to sift through numerous media newsletters to present the most relevant information in an accessible format.

Additionally, the newsletter claims to provide “insider knowledge and enlightened views,” which feels a bit daunting given Mediaite’s reputation for lackluster writing and uniform thinking.

Then came the real issue…

“One Sheet will be helmed by Mediaite’s founding editor, Colby Hall,” who was said to bring his thoughtful and effortless analysis to a well-suited platform.

If honesty prevailed, both One Sheet and Mediaite might currently be in a more favorable position. For monthly fees, 1 sheet You will end up with inaccuracies.

As of now, Colby Hall is suspended due to “multiple incidents involving misinformation and fabricated citations,” according to a report by Semafor.

Fabricated quotes.

Oh dear.

While discussing the situation with Semafor, Hall suggested that AI might have contributed to the confusion, at least in my view.

“Like many editors, I use AI in a limited way as part of my editorial workflow, mainly for assistance with copy and organization,” Hall stated. “Regrettably, we fell victim to a simple mistake.”

Despite this, Mediaite’s Editor-in-Chief Joe DePaolo emphasized the gravity of the situation when announcing Hall’s suspension, aiming to clarify the AI excuse.

“We presented our findings to Colby Hall, who suggested that the mistakes stemmed solely from poor information aggregation, not the use of AI,” DePaolo noted. “Regardless, this is entirely unacceptable, and Mr. Hall has been suspended pending further investigation.”

On Monday, Semafor reported that One Sheet “appears to have blatantly fabricated a quote, misattributing it to our own John Passantino, while attacking our website and newsletter for actions we didn’t take.”

Semafor added that since One Sheet’s launch, CNN, Fox News, and other outlets have been mentioned incorrectly. Essentially, those naive enough to subscribe were misled about who said what. It’s hard to believe that anyone would read Mediaite willingly, even for free.

When incidents like this arise, humility is key in our industry. I admit I’ve made my share of mistakes. However, fabricating quotes? No. When errors occur, responsible editors should immediately 1) rectify the process and 2) thoroughly verify all attributions before hitting “Submit.”

Regarding Colby Hall, he’s been trained to promote the necessary narrative with approved information. His loyalty to the corrupt media and the Democratic Party is well established. He’ll undoubtedly return.
