Mayor Mamdani Claims Leaving New York Is Only in Your Mind

New York City Mayor Addresses Wealthy Resident Exodus Claims

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, affiliated with the Democratic Socialists, stated on Wednesday that the city isn’t witnessing the much-discussed departure of affluent residents driven by high taxes.

As the 2025 mayoral election approaches, discussions have intensified around the notion of affluent New Yorkers relocating to states with lower taxes, particularly Florida. Mamdani has consistently advocated for significant tax increases to fund social welfare initiatives. Reports of an exodus surged as his electoral prospects improved. However, during a “Tax the Rich” event on Tax Day, he refuted these claims, calling them fictitious and contending the opposite is true.

“All this chatter about a hypothetical exodus resulting from taxing the wealthiest New Yorkers properly? Back when I was a state legislator, we heard the same arguments as we pushed for tax increases. What we know now is that, even after implementing those taxes, the number of billionaires has actually increased,” Mamdani mentioned.

“Moreover, any conversation about this supposed exodus should consider the real departures happening in the city—the ones involving working-class individuals and those who can’t afford to stay here,” he added.

On March 11, Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged wealthy residents to return from Florida to support the state’s extensive social programs, pointing out that many have relocated to Palm Beach, impacting the state’s tax revenue.

“Many workers are now settling in Jersey City, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and other areas where they can earn a better living,” Mamdani noted. “Between 2000 and 2020, the city has lost 200,000 Black residents.”

Following Mamdani’s success in the June 2025 primary, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis commented that left-leaning policies could push more people out of New York, subsequently boosting Florida’s real estate market.

“If this socialist mayoral candidate wins, property prices in Palm Beach will go up even further because people will be leaving New York,” DeSantis remarked. “De Blasio was problematic, but this guy could be even worse.”

There is indeed a migration trend from blue states like California, as Florida’s lack of a state income tax attracts many. According to an April 2023 Siena University poll, 27% of New York State residents plan to leave within five years, and 31% intend to relocate upon retirement.
