New York Governor Signs Bill for Speed Limiters

On Wednesday, New York’s Democratic governor approved a bill that grants authorities the ability to mandate speed limiters for drivers who are found speeding excessively.

This legislation, championed by Governor Kathy Hochul, aims to initiate an experimental program focused on what are termed “super speeders” in New York City, with the possibility of extending it to other regions in the state, as reported by WABC. Drivers accumulating 16 or more speeding tickets within a year will be classified as “super speeders” and required to install an “intelligent speed assist device” in their vehicles.

Reportedly, school zone cameras and red light cameras are primarily responsible for generating these speeding violations.

The “Intelligent Speed Assistant” will help prevent drivers from going over the speed limit. Governor Hochul stated that the device needs to be installed within 45 days of notification, or else the vehicle’s registration could be revoked.

Hochul emphasized that the signing of this bill is part of her efforts in the fiscal year 2027 budget, all aimed at enhancing transportation safety in New York City.

“My top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe, and I’m pleased to be making significant investments in law enforcement to address crime, bolster protections for residents, and safeguard communities throughout our state,” Hochul shared during a television segment.

Depending on how the “superspeeder” initiative performs in New York City, there may be opportunities for other communities in New York State to implement similar measures. Interestingly, a pilot program involving speed limiters was introduced in 50 vehicles in New York City about four years ago.

It’s worth noting that similar laws are already in effect in Washington, DC, and Virginia. The capital’s measures came into force recently, while Virginia’s legislation stemming from former Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin is set to take effect on July 1, 2025. Washington State also approved a comparable law looking toward implementation in 2029.

Interestingly, local authorities in Washington, DC issued countless speeding tickets amounting to millions of dollars through speed cameras by 2025.
