Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is initiating a new program aimed at providing financial support of up to $500 for massages, yoga classes, and other wellness activities for “queer and trans” immigrants—this comes even as the city faces a significant budget shortfall of nearly $50 million.
The initiative, called OUTnewcomers, is being run by a nonprofit organization and has backing from the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement, as stated in a recent announcement.
According to their communication, “We will offer Boston’s LGBTQ+ immigrants a wellness stipend ranging from $250 to $500 to enhance their mental health through non-clinical options like yoga, meditation, creative outlets, peer support, hair salons, acupuncture, massage, gym memberships, and more.”
“Project: Belonging Matters reflects our understanding that rest, healing, and community are essential. LGBTQ+ immigrants often bear the weight of trauma and isolation, frequently lacking access to care.”
The vouchers, available exclusively in Boston, range between $250 and $500, prioritizing low-income individuals, isolated gay and trans immigrants, as well as asylum seekers and refugees.
However, the program has met criticism. Many voices on social media have labeled it a misuse of taxpayer money.
One user expressed outrage on X, saying, “Oh my god, Democratic Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is giving ‘LGBTQ+ immigrants’ vouchers worth $250 to $500. They can enjoy yoga, salon visits, massages, and gym memberships—all funded by your tax dollars!”
Another individual also questioned, “And I suppose you believe all the money you sent today was worth it?”
It remains unclear how much of the taxpayer budget is allocated for the initiative.
This program acceptance is underway despite the city grappling with a $48.4 million budget deficit, with Wu proposing a $4.9 billion budget for the fiscal year 2027.
No immediate response was received when reaching out to the nonprofit organization.
