CEO of Snapchat Faces Backlash Over Coachella Celebration Amid Layoffs

Evan Spiegel, the CEO of Snapchat, seems to have made a misstep in judgment recently. The billionaire and co-founder of the popular image messaging app was seen enjoying a lively time at Coachella with his wife, supermodel Miranda Kerr, while his company was planning to terminate around 1,000 positions.

This glamorous weekend included affectionate moments shared on social media, where the couple posted pictures of themselves celebrating just days before the company’s layoff announcement. In one photo, Spiegel was seen affectionately kissing Kerr while sporting casual festival gear.

Meanwhile, an unsettling atmosphere loomed over Snapchat employees, who faced uncertainty following the news of significant job cuts. The decision to hold a party during such a tumultuous time drew criticism, with some commenters suggesting it could lead to increased unrest among staff.

Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, weighed in on the situation, drawing comparisons to past celebrations that seemed ill-timed. “In this photo, we just released 1,000 units,” he remarked, alluding to the layoffs in a post shared on social media.

Interestingly, Snapchat’s stock initially rose by 7% upon the announcement of the layoffs, but then saw a slight decline during subsequent trading sessions.

Spiegel, 34, has addressed the job cuts, expressing his deep regret about letting go 16% of the workforce. He noted in a memo that while these changes are challenging, they are essential for Snap’s long-term success. The increasing reliance on artificial intelligence, he suggested, is expected to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

The company is also closing over 300 open positions while looking to AI to help guide future initiatives. Spiegel anticipates that these adjustments could lead to significant cost savings and ongoing profitability improvements.

Founded in 2015, Spiegel became the world’s youngest billionaire at the age of 24. Layoffs in the tech industry, including major firms like Meta and Oracle, have become increasingly common as companies navigate a challenging economic landscape.
