Jennifer Siebel Newsom in Political and Legal Battle

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the vocal “first partner” of California Governor Gavin Newsom, finds herself amid a contentious political and legal situation involving both her husband and the Justice Department under President Trump.

On Monday, Governor Newsom revealed that federal investigators have reached out to his acquaintances, former staff, and colleagues, suggesting they are targeting both him and his wife. The governor’s office describes this as a politically charged investigation, particularly as Newsom contemplates a run for president in 2028.

“You can subpoena my records, you can investigate me, you can harass me, you can put my name on any enemy list, but you can keep my wife and family away from personal vendettas,” Newsom expressed in a social media video.

At 51, Siebel Newsom is a documentary filmmaker and the founder of a nonprofit organization. Her public efforts focus on gender equality, women in leadership roles, parenting, and the influence of media and technology on kids.

She was raised in the affluent town of Ross in Marin County and was a registered Republican until 2008, the year she wed Newsom. Notably, many of her family members still identify as staunch Republicans.

Before her husband took office in 2018, Siebel Newsom established the Representation Project, which aims to promote gender equality through films. In recent times, it has received backing from California Partners Project. This nonprofit seems to have been established in 2020, potentially to enhance her visibility and cover her costs.

A Post analysis noted that Newsom advocated for over $4.4 million in substantial payments that supported California Partners projects from various special interests, including indigenous tribes and major donors. Many of these entities have conducted business with the state or have benefitted from actions taken by Newsom during his administration. However, Newsom’s office has asserted that the donations had no bearing on state decisions, with representatives stating that the governor’s actions are strictly in the best interests of Californians.

Siebel Newsom, while not drawing a salary from California Partners Projects, received around $150,000 or more from the Representation Projects as indicated in IRS filings. The nonprofit also made annual payments to her film production company, Girls Club Entertainment.

Despite her significant political connections, Siebel Newsom has often struggled with meeting the state’s business filing requirements. Over the last 17 years, Girls Club Entertainment has faced numerous business suspensions and delinquency penalties for compliance issues, the latest being in 2020. According to a California Secretary of State official, suspended firms “lose the right, power and privilege to do business in California.”

In recent years, Siebel Newsom has held prominent roles, including Chair Emeritus of the California Volunteer Commission and Co-Chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Health.

On Monday, she criticized President Trump in light of the extensive federal inquiry. “There are clearly no boundaries to what Donald Trump will do to get his way or to challenge those who stand in his way,” she commented. “This is not the actions of a president. The governor and I will continue to speak truth to power because the American people deserve so much more.”
